We have a double Cannon day today. I have Mrs. Donaldson's 3rd grade class in the morning, then Ms. Lyman's class in the afternoon! The ladies in the office now have a running joke that I work part time at Cannon with how much time I have spent there this year.
Starting with Mrs. Donaldson's class, they were working on their comparing fractions unit so I was able to use my fraction pizza lesson with them. I started with a little warm up on the board, like always. Splitting up some circles into pieces and doing some comparisons to get their brains on the right track. Next I started passing out the worksheets. Mrs. Donaldson noticed that a few of my denominators were actually 4th grade denominators and not 3rd so we did a mass correction session and changed a few of the fractions. It was nice to get this experience of correcting mistakes in the moment. Dispite our little hiccup, the students were still having a great time. I loved their reactions when they got something they didn't want. It was like a little drama scene from Shakespeare, it was adorable. Once all of their comparisons were done and they had made their pizzas, I had them do a little show and tell to explain why they had gotten the toppings they got on their pizza.
It was so sweet to see how much these students loved this activity. I always have a great time with these students and I could tell they were having fun. So, later in the day I was back at Cannon to teach Ms. Lyman's 4th graders for the first time! I got their right as they were switching classes so I was able to greet them as they walked in and got setteled. They were also working on comparing fractions so I used my 4th grade version of my fraction pizza lesson. I again, started on the board with some nice partitioned circles to get their brains warmed up. They were all so polite when I massed out the worksheets, it was adorable. These kiddos were being a little aggresive with the dice rolling, which I thought was hilarious. I heard one student go, "You have to let the die know who's boss!" As they were wrapping up their comparisons and making their pizzas, they were all talking about how they were going to ask their parents to get pizza for dinner, which seems to be a common theme with this lesson. I had them do a little show and tell at the end.
Overall, it was a great day at Cannon Elementary. State testing season is coming up so my lessons will be put on pause, which is ok because mid terms are also coming up, wish me luck! :)
