I am officially over this cold! Back to feeling 100%. Today I was back at Silver Lake Elementary with Mrs. Vietti's 2nd grade class. They were on their bar graph unit this week so I had a bunch of stuff planned for them.
To start, I did a physical demonstration with them. I had them choose between 4 different fruits and they had to choose their favorite and make a line. This created a physical bar graph that they could see and analyze. Once the bar graph was created, I had them turn inwards and talk about some things that they noticed. They were able to point out which one was the tallest or had the most and they have some really good reasoning behind it. We did this a few times, and every time they had some really great insight and they had a great time.
Next, we did a little friendly rock, paper, scissors competition. I had them partner up and gave each of them a rock, paper, scissors worksheet. The sheet has a 2x10 grid on it. How it works is they play about 8 round of the game and after each round the color in a box on either the win or lose column depending on what happened. At the end they had nice bar graphs that they were able to compare with their classmates.
Next I printed out a some packets that had bar graph questions on them. I split them into 4 groups and passed out the packets. Next they were given pieces of paper to act as the "bars" for the bar graph. I had made a big grid with the answers to the questions in the packet. So this was to be treated as a relay race. The students would answer the question and send one person up to put the bar over the answer. Whoever completed their bar graph first, wins! They were having a blast with this. I loved seeing the teamwork and collaboration with each other and seeing how competitive they got.
These kiddos had so much energy today! I could tell they were having such a fun time not only with the relay race but just with the lesson overall. I'm so glad I was able to come back again. Tomorrow, I'm back at Cannon Elementary with Mrs. Donaldson's 3rd graders and Ms. Lyman's 4th grade class for the first time. :)
